Unleash Your Creativity with SoundFonts by Brad Howes
SoundFonts by Brad Howes offers versatile and user-friendly sound design tools that elevate music production, perfect for both amateurs and professionals.
This app offers a straightforward yet powerful solution for audio synthesis with a vast collection of sounds. It utilizes an AVAudioUnitSampler to produce audio output when keys are pressed. The available sounds are sourced from soundfont (SF2) files, including those found online for free, though the quality may vary.
In addition to being a standalone app, it also functions as an AUv3 plug-in, making it compatible with popular music production applications like GarageBand, Logic, and AUM. To further enhance your experience, the app includes two AUv3 effects units – reverb and delay – which can be used independently.
One of the notable features of this app is its support for MIDI input. Simply connect a MIDI keyboard/controller to your iOS device, and you're ready to go! MIDI over Bluetooth is also supported. Furthermore, MIDI controls can be used to adjust certain app settings, including the active favorite preset and the audio effects.
To use the app, select a SoundFont name from the left list and choose a patch name from the right. Then, start playing. Here are some additional tips:
- Add a SoundFont (SF2) file that you have downloaded onto your iCloud Drive by tapping the "+" button and locating the file. You can change the display name of the SoundFont by swiping right. To remove undesirable SoundFonts, simply swipe left on their name.
- Activate reverb and delay effects by tapping the wavy "signal" button.
- Swipe right on a patch name to mark it as a favorite. Favorite patches can be identified by the star next to their name. By swiping right and selecting the edit action, you can rename a favorite. To remove a favorite, swipe left and select the remove action.
- To adjust the range of the keyboard, touch the labels at either end of the black bar. The range can be as low as "C0" and as high as "C9". Swiping left or right on the black bar can accomplish the same result. Note that this feature is not available in the AUv3 extension. Use the native keyboard controls of the application to achieve a similar effect. The keyboard sliding feature can be toggled by tapping the small arrow between the note labels.
- Switch between the soundfont patches listing and the favorites view by double-tapping on the patch name in the black bar above the keyboard. Alternatively, swipe left or right with two fingers in the patches and favorites views to switch between views.
- In the favorites view, double-tap on a favorite button to edit it. Additionally, you can rearrange the favorite buttons with a tap-and-hold gesture.
